Fortune telling has been around pretty much as long as mankind has been able to talk. As a group humans are inquisitive about their surroundings and how they interact within them. The original fortune tellers were most likely asked to for tell the movement of game animals, the weather patterns of an… area and the likelihood of a good harvest. Eventually the gender of children in the womb was speculated on, and of coarse questions of the heart were asked. I don't so much think that fortune telling was invented so much as it evolved out of our own insecurities, speculations and fascination with the unknown. (MORE)

Shakespeare uses the witches as a plot device to change Macbeth's fortune. The length and outcome of one's life (destiny) is predetermined by external forces. In Macbeth , the Witches represent this influence. The play makes an important distinction: Fate may dictate what will be, but how that de…stiny comes about is a matter of chance and of that individuals own choice or free will. Although Macbeth is told he will become king, he is not told how to achieve the position of king: that much is up to him. We cannot blame him for becoming king (it is his Destiny or his fortune), but we can blame him for the way in which he chooses to get there (by his own free will). (MORE)

Fortune tellers certainly exist in that people who claim to be able to predict the future exist, but there is no hard evidence that suggests that these people can predict the future more accurately than the average person. Some recent experiments have shown that humans' brains can respond to stimul…i fractions of seconds before it occurs. While this is scientifically interesting, if the information is accurate, it would indicate that anyone can "predict the future" in fraction-of-second intervals on some subconscious level, which is very different from what fortune tellers attempt to do. In the Bible: Book of Deuteronomy, there is a reference to fortune-telling in the Book of Isaiah (8:19). In this verse, people are encouraged to turn to God in order to find answers to their questions about the future, rather than to witches and mediums. New Testament references are also availabl…e as well and in each case, fortune telling is seen as contrary to both Jewish and Christian teaching. For example, in Book of Acts 16:16-18 Paul encountered a girl who had fortune-telling powers. He then prayed in the name of Christ and commanded the "evil spirit(s)" who had invaded the girl to leave her. Once the spirit(s) did, her fortune telling ability vanished. So I conclude fortune telling is real but is forbidden by God and against what God wants (the best for you). (MORE)
